iXBRL filing for dormant companies

Dormant doesn't mean nothing to file. Your company still owes Companies House accounts every year — and depending on your HMRC status, possibly a CT600 too. We make both quick and inexpensive.

/the-misconception

The most expensive assumption a dormant company can make

"We didn't trade, so there's nothing to file" is one of the most common — and costly — misunderstandings in UK company compliance. Companies House late filing penalties apply to dormant companies exactly as they do to trading ones, starting at £150 and doubling if you were late the previous year too.

01

Companies House: always

Every registered company must deliver accounts annually, dormant or not. Dormant company accounts are simpler, but they are still a statutory filing with a real deadline.

02

HMRC: it depends

If HMRC has issued a notice to deliver a return, a CT600 is due even for a dormant period — and since April 2026, the fixed penalty for a late return starts at £200 even when no tax is owed.

03

Penalties don't sleep

A dormant company holding a property, a name, or IP can quietly accumulate penalties year after year if filings lapse — often discovered only when the company is needed again.

Minimum tagging tier

Dormant company accounts are usually our simplest, fastest job — priced accordingly at our £45 +VAT minimum tagging rate.

/what-we-do

The simplest filing we do — priced like it

Dormant company accounts contain a handful of figures and a balance sheet statement. We tag them to Companies House requirements, validate against the current schema, and return a filing-ready document — usually same day.

  • Dormant company accounts (DCA) tagged to Companies House standard
  • Nil CT600 preparation support if HMRC has requested a return
  • Multi-year catch-up if your dormant company has fallen behind

Frequently asked questions

Does a dormant company really need to file every year?

Yes — Companies House accounts are due annually regardless of trading activity, and the same late filing penalties apply as for trading companies. See our who must file guide.

Do we need to file a CT600 if the company is dormant?

Only if HMRC has issued a notice to deliver a return. If a notice has been issued, a nil CT600 is still due, in iXBRL, on the standard deadline.

We've fallen behind on a few years of dormant filings — can you help?

Yes — we can handle multi-year catch-up filings. The sooner you file, the less the escalating late filing penalties add up, so it's worth acting as soon as you can rather than waiting.
